Taking Part Project

The London Borough of Sutton is one of only 5 London boroughs to be awarded a grant for Arts Council England’s Pilot Project Taking Part.

Inclusion in the Taking Part programme is a unique opportunity to capitalise on an exciting time for the arts in Sutton, increasing attendance and participation amongst the widest scope of our community, and through the Imagine Participatory Arts Festival making it possible to showcase the talent of local people in this exhibition.

Over 200 people have been directly involved in projects ranging from creative writing, photography, filming, arts and crafts and signing with many of the participants having had no regular access to arts activities before the start of the project.

Successfully applying to be part of the project provided Sutton with the opportunity to bring high quality artists to the Borough and utilise the wealth of experience of community artists working amongst us.

Groups worked under the title of Future Present and were asked to think about what the future held for them. This generic topic has been the starting point for many exciting debates through out the groups and has fostered some exceptional work.

The Future Present Exhibition In May 08 was a culmination of all this work.

Special thanks to Apples and Snakes, Shake UR Arts, Chandra Chakrubati, Simon Honey and Samia Tossio for their commitment to this project.
